Understanding electric bikes: An overview
The different types of electric bikes: mountain bikes, city bikes, folding bikes…
Not all electric bikes are created equal. There are several types, each adapted to a specific use.
Here are some of the most popular:
- Electric mountain bikes: Perfect for adventurers who like to venture off the beaten track, with robust suspension and power suited to off-road riding.
- Electric city bikes: Ideal for commuting in the city, with elegant design, a smooth ride and practical features like luggage racks.
- Electric folding bikes: The solution for those who need to carry their bike on public transport or store it in a small space, without sacrificing performance.
- Trekking electric bikes: Designed for long distances and travel, with high range, optimum comfort and accessories such as mudguards and luggage racks.
- Electric road bikes: For sporty cyclists who want the speed and efficiency of a road bike, with electric assistance for hills and long trips.
- Cargo bikes: Perfect for transporting heavy loads, children or even pets, with a reinforced structure and large loading capacity.
- Electric bikes for seniors: Designed with low entry and gentle assistance to provide a safe, comfortable ride for older cyclists.
- Electric beach bikes: With their wide tires and ability to ride on sand, they’re perfect for beach rides or loose terrain.
- Electric mountain bikes: Combining the features of road bikes and mountain bikes, they offer versatility for those who want a bike suited to different terrains.
- Three-wheel electric bikes (tricycles): Offering extra stability, they’re ideal for those with balance problems or who want a more stable bike for transporting goods.
- Children’s electric bikes: frame and design adapted to children’s morphology, with the option for parents to limit speed.
Choosing the right type depends on your riding habits, your preferences and how you intend to use your electric bike.
How an electric bike works?
An electric bike runs on a battery-powered motor. The electric assistance kicks in as you pedal, helping you to climb hills and cover greater distances without breaking a sweat. I find it’s like having an invisible friend pushing at your back! 😄
Choosing the perfect electric bike: here are the criteria to consider!
With so many options and types of electric bike available, choosing the right model can quickly become a headache!
Fortunately, I’m here to guide you through the essential criteria to consider. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or buying your first EAB, these tips will help you find the bike that’s right for you.
Age of rider
Age is just a number, but it can influence the type of bike you choose. Some models are better suited to older riders, such as electric bikes that are easy to straddle and have gentler assistance, or electric bike models specially designed for children.
Rider weight
The rider’s weight can influence motor power and battery life. Make sure the bike can support your weight and that of your luggage. There are also electric bikes for strong people.
Bike weight
A lighter electric bike will be easier to maneuver and transport. If you often have to carry your bike, opt for a lightweight model.
Battery life
Battery life determines the distance you can cover on a single charge. The longer the range, the farther you can go.
Motor power
Motor power determines the strength of the electric assistance. A more powerful motor will help you climb hills more easily.
Motor types
There are different types of motor, such as hub motors and central motors. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages, so choose according to your riding preferences. To find out more about this somewhat technical subject, please read my article Which electric bike motor should you choose?
Your environment
Your riding environment influences your choice of bike. An electric mountain bike will be better suited to mountain trails, while an urban bike will be perfect for city streets.
If you plan to ride in the rain or in a variety of weather conditions, make sure the bike is equipped with suitable tires and brakes.
Transporting children, belongings or pets
Sometimes you don’t just choose an electric bike for yourself… 🙂
Some electric bikes are designed to carry passengers or heavy loads. If you need to transport children, belongings or even pets, look for a suitable model like a cargo or utility electric bike.
Comfort and ergonomics
Comfort is essential, especially if you’re planning long rides. Look for a bike with a comfortable saddle, ergonomic handles and a pleasant riding position.
Ease of use and maintenance
Choose a bike that’s easy to use and maintain. Some models offer features such as an LCD screen to monitor your performance, speed, battery level, and a diagnostic system to detect problems.
Bike size
Bike size is crucial for a comfortable and safe ride. A bike that’s too big or too small can cause pain and increase the risk of accidents.
To determine the ideal size, it’s essential to consider your height and inseam length. Most brands offer size guides to help you choose the right frame.
Wheel size
Wheel size influences the bike’s handling, speed and comfort. Electric bikes are generally fitted with 20, 24, 26, 27.5 or 29-inch wheels.
Smaller wheels offer better acceleration and are ideal for city riding, while larger wheels are perfect for rough terrain and offer greater stability.
Frame
The frame is the backbone of the bike, determining its strength, weight and style. Aluminum frames are light and affordable, while carbon frames are lighter and stiffer, but also more expensive.
There are also steel frames, heavier but very durable. During my tests, I fell in love with an aluminum frame, which in my opinion offers the best value for money!
What are the differences between men’s and women’s electric bikes?
Ah, the eternal question: is there a difference between men’s and women’s electric bikes?
The answer is both yes and no. Some electric bikes are designed specifically for women or men, with differences in frame shape, saddle and grips. For example, Dutch bikes for women may have a lower frame for easier ascent and descent.
However, these differences are often subtle and related to morphology rather than gender. The important thing is to choose a bike that suits you, whatever the label.
Personally, I’ve seen men prefer “women’s” models for their comfort, and vice versa. So don’t get caught up in stereotypes, and choose the bike that makes you feel most comfortable on the road!
What price should I invest in an electric bike?
From less than $500 to $2,000 or even much more, there are electric bikes at every price point. In addition to the quality of the electrical components – motor and battery – it’s often the cycle equipment that justifies the price difference.
Our advice: if you want to make electric biking a regular habit, invest no less than $1,000 to $1,200 for an urban model, or risk being disappointed by its reliability. In the field of electric mountain bikes, expect to pay well over $2,000 for a quality model. This is a substantial investment, which can be partly covered by the electric bike purchase premium and certain local grants.
